Bipolar Disorder Disability: Social Security Disability Claims for Bipolar Disorder

Understanding SSD for Bipolar Disorder

Navigating Life with Bipolar Disorder

Bipolar Disorder, previously referred to as manic depression, is a complex mental health condition that causes extreme fluctuations in mood, energy levels, activity, and concentration. These fluctuations can significantly impair the ability to manage daily responsibilities and maintain consistent employment.

According to the National Institute of Mental Health, there are three primary types of Bipolar Disorder:

  • Bipolar I Disorder: Characterized by episodes of mania that may include hyperactivity, euphoria, impulsive behavior, insomnia, delusions, paranoia, and racing thoughts. Depression may also be present, but it is not required for diagnosis.

  • Bipolar II Disorder: Involves recurring episodes of depression and hypomania (a less intense form of mania), often overlapping and alternating rapidly. Individuals may feel hopeless and energized at the same time, experiencing dramatic mood swings.

  • Cyclothymia (Cyclothymic Disorder): Consists of chronic, fluctuating mood disturbances involving periods of hypomanic and depressive symptoms that are less severe but may persist over long periods, often going undiagnosed.

Because the severity and duration of symptoms can vary greatly, Bipolar Disorder often requires long-term or lifelong treatment. For some, symptoms can be managed with medication and therapy. For others, manic or depressive episodes may become so disruptive that maintaining regular employment becomes impossible.
